Operation: Route 66

Feb. 2, '12

Hey Gang, some of you are probably sick of hearing about this topic - and I apologize to be putting it on your dashboard again, but for those of you who haven’t heard about it I’m excited to get your reaction on this.

In May of this year my dad and I will be riding across the West from Chicago to Los Angeles (Route 66) on motorcycles. We’ll be going with a small film crew in a chase vehicle which will be documenting the ride. On the route we’ll be interviewing veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Other parents and children who have put themselves in harms way so that we might have the best chance at living the American dream. We’ll be filming the interviews as well as making portraits with the eventual goal to be to make a film chronicling the ride and the soldiers we meet along the way.

When we first started my dad and I couldn’t put a face to soldiers. We had an abstract idea of silhouettes of men in uniforms with guns. Since then we’ve gotten to meet amazing people with unique stories of bravery, tragedy, terror, success, bonding, injury, and recovery. We’re excited to bring these stories and these faces to the 99% of Americans who, similar to us, didn’t know any warriors but have benefited from their service.

We are looking to tell an apolitical adventure story about a place and it’s people and inspire Americans to discover their country and their neighbors. The film along with a collection of the portraits will be made available to the public in October of this year. Before the election in an attempt to cool the vitriolic tone of our politics and remind our citizens that it doesn’t matter if you stand to the left or to the right - what matters is that you get to choose because of the 1% of Americans who sacrifice.

In order to make this story as good as it can be I turn to you - tumblr - looking for people who have experience in producing who can help us coordinate interviews and events on the route, handle permitting, maintain notes on the days events for the film editor and generally manage crew’s needs. Experience and three free weeks in May are a plus… nay, a requirement. If you or someone you know fits the bill, please contact me at nickgerberphoto at gmail.
